PDF as a standart format for electronic documents

PDF (Portable Document Format) developed by Adobe Systems, PDF is a digital document format designed to preserve the layout and appearance of an electronic document or the scanned version of a paper document on different platforms. PDF has approved by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as a standard format for electronic documents. ISO has christened the current working version, version 1.7 of PDF, ISO 32000-1.

ISO 32000-1:2008 specifies a digital form for representing electronic documents to enable users to exchange and view electronic documents independent of the environment in which they were created or the environment in which they are viewed or printed. ISO 32000-1:2008 does not specify the following:

specific processes for converting paper or electronic documents to the PDF format;
specific technical design, user interface or implementation or operational details of rendering;
specific physical methods of storing these documents such as media and storage conditions;
methods for validating the conformance of PDF files or readers;
required computer hardware and/or operating system.

The openly published standard provides the technical information required for writing software programs that can create and read PDF files, ensuring that organizations will always have some tools available to render PDF.
